    Default Blotches in Paint

    Hello Everyone.

I'm using a Createx Opaque Black paint and thinning it with water. I have tried ratio's of Paint to water as follows (1-1,1-2,1-1.5) and am getting this blotches as depicted below. I am using a Paasche VL with a #3 needle/Nozzle combo. I have a Paasche Compressor says do not exceed 40PSI. There is no regulator except for the screw in type. There is no Moisture Trap. The compressor pulses air as there is no tank. I do strain the paint. In the next few days or so I will get the adapters I need to attach to my engraving compressor that has a water trap and regulator.

Is my paint not being strained enough?

Is it moisture from the compressor?

    Wrong Needle Size?

Too much air? Not enough Air?

    Any ideas?

    Engraver,

I think you might have a couple of problems, contributing to the problem. If you are following Don's lessons you may have forgotten one of his very first suggestions, buy a airbrush ready paint, it will help you not having to worry about mixing and thinning. I purchased a pint (16 oz.) of Golden black for practice. I got it, from Dick Blick's, at the same time I bought a pad of the newsprint for practice. Never had a problem with the paint. I still use it for practice. It's not made for T-Shirts, so that Createx will be needed for things like that. Take his advice, buy one of the paints he suggests, it will relieve you of that mixing problem. Worry about that later.

If you are painting on NEWSPRINT it can absorb the paint weird, especially if too thin. But it's okay to practice on. With Golden, I can use as low as 15-20 psi. with my gravity feed and 20-22 psi. with my bottom feed. When you're starting out it is frustrating.

The other problem might be the tank less compressor. Also, you need a water trap/regulator, just to be sure the air is dry and for sure what pressure you are spraying. The 40 psi. is very high for thin paint. That's probably one of the worst problems, along with that pulsing air. I think once you set up that compressor you have for engraving, plus the suggested paint, those things will cure most of your problems. You're just starting out and will pick up on how to do things quickly.

    Kevin,

I would definitely have to agree with Jan, get yourself an airbrush ready paint.
When I was just starting out I was using Auto Air paint, and let me tell, that stuff was a pain in the ***ss to work with
I could never get it to flow properly, and it literally took all the fun out of airbrushing for me.
Then one day somebody sugested that I use Golden Airbrush Colors.
Although I still got tip dry, most of my major problems where gone. All I had left to do was learn how to use the airbrush. I no longer had worry about the paint flowing properly.
    I haven't looked back since

    Your choice Kevin

    Mike,

Yes I use Createx on t-shirts and leather, but it still needs to be thinned out some, where as Golden sprays right out of the bottle, which is really nice for beginners. IMHO, I would say that Golden flows better than Createx. Although I'm sure some people would disagree with me on this.

Give them both a try and see what works best for you
What it really boils down to is personal preference.

    Spray On
