    Airbrush Material Product Review

On a recent trip to Hobby Lobby I found this masking material by Artool “Hobby Masking” so I thought I’d give it a try. Hobby Mask retails for $12.99 and is a clear plastic like film that comes as a roll 4” by 5 yds with a low tack adhesive on back, solvent-proof even.

    From the package:
“Artoll Hobby Mask is a stretchable, reposition able clear masking film. It is perfect for all 1/8th - 1/25th model scales, including RC cars, model airplanes and trains, model cars, kits, figure models and a myriad of custom airbrush applications.”

This masking material is like a smaller version of Artool Stretch Mask which is sold in big rolls. As with that masking material this Hobby Mask does not accept bring drawn on by pencil or pen, marker does work. This masking material is best used where the design is already laid out on the painting surface as laying your design out on top of this masking material might be a bit tough.

I put Hobby Mask to a small test on this helmet I happen to be working on where I missed a corner, we’ll use the Hobby Mask to try and correct that. This little test is on a clear coated surface not a raw base coat so your experience maybe different if you try and use it on an unsealed base coat.

As you can see in this picture the Hobby Mask is clear and adheres to a clear coated surface very well. I’ll stretch it just a bit to get it to lay flat making sure to work all the air bubbles out.

The Hobby Mask cut very easily with a new #11 blade/ hobby knife and left a very clean edge. In this picture you can see I applied my Red to fix the corner I messed up on initial painting of this graphic. As advertised using a solvent based paint with this masking film caused no ill effects, I was able to reposition the masking very easily and while applying my paint the masking stood up to airbrush very well without lifting.

I give this masking material thumbs up and believe it will make a great addition to your airbrush tool box of masking materials.
