Airbrushing Hair or Fur by Patrick Charuel

This fun little airbrush project written by my good friend from France, Patrick Charuel for Airbrush Technique Magazine Extended originally and now published here. This is but one way to go about airbrushing hair or fur and is very easy technique to master. I hope you have fun with this project, it's just paint after all.

    fur 1
    Required materials:
    -Airbrush
    -Paint Black

This how to article will show you how create a fur effect easily. With this technique and the home made stencil you will be able to create, fur, feathers, hair, etc. You will always have the stencils ready to help you in many situations.

To build your hair stencils, you have to cut two circles out of thin cardboard. Find different kinds of hair (brushes, real hair, etc…) to use in your stencil. Put a paper circle on the table and put some glue all over the first circle and add the hair to different positions around the circle. Put some glue on the second circle and press it over the first one. After giving it time to dry you have a round stencil with various hair ready to use over and over again. Make different stencils some with straight hair, curly hair, hard one, and flexible one. The more different stencils you have ready to use, the easier it will be to find the right solution to solve all sorts of situations dealing with rendering hair, fur.

    fur 2
First I spray a very thin black all around the circle drawn on the painting surface with pencil. I only use the top hair of the stencil, the further you keep the hair off from the surface more of a blurred affect you will get.

    fur 3
Here the result of the first stage.

    fur 4
I continue by using the same technique with another layer half over the first one.

    fur 5
With a round stencil I spray a thin black to outline which will serve as the eyes.

    fur 6

With the smaller holes in the stencil I complete the eyes.
Here are the results after this stage.

    fur 6
With the round circle stencil I place the nose and by free hand I add the shadows on the eyes and over the nose. To give depth to the nose I add more of the black to the under side of the nose leaving a light spot on top of the nose.

    fur 6
To add some more fur I take may hair stencil and put some more hair all over the design.

    fur 8

Here is the result of my small nice fur ball monster.

    fur 9
To create the legs I use a flexible stencil and spray the inside part of legs. You can use all kinds of stencils to do this. Cut a curve in a piece of paper and you get the same result.

    fur 9
    Here are the two legs.

    fur 10
I continue by free hand and spray quickly 2 big feet, 2 arms and 2 hands.

    fur 10
By free hand I add some depth to the design by spraying shadows on the outside part of the arms and legs. I also give depth to the feet by adding black. With my stencil I spray some grass under the feet. Here a very small design completed, took me around 10 minutes to do it ! One more time my hair stencils helped me a lot and gave me a fast solution to create this strange animal.
With practice it will help you to paint wolfs, tigers, hair portrait …..
