Airbrushes and what you might want to
consider before buying one.

Airbrushes what a mess as far as figuring out which one
would best suite your needs, budget. Every week a new airbrush pops up it seems
to make it even harder to decide. I put this together to try and help you
muddle thru what's available and what you might want to take into consideration
BEFORE you buy. I'm very uncomfortable suggesting any single brand that's not
my job as I see it; I promote airbrushing in general no one product. I have
nothing to gain by you buying one airbrush brand over another except to see you
enjoy your experiences while airbrushing. Below are some reasons you might want
to stick with name brand products (airbrushes).
First let me define
brand name airbrushes: Those airbrush manufactures that have over the
years brought innovation thru brand new products to the market. Not rehashed,
or copies of existing airbrushes but new designs, innovations that has helped
airbrushing advance. Those companies that have worked hard over the years
building a brand name and manufacturing quality airbrushes; some of companies
that should fit within that definition would be Iwata, Passche, Badger.
Knock off airbrushes: Airbrushes that look like a best selling
brand name airbrush.
Reasons why you might consider buying, supporting
brand name airbrushes: To help support the very art form you are interested in,
airbrushing. These days with the FREE trade going on from country to country it
has opened the door for those countries, companies that think nothing about
stealing intellectual property or forging products in fly by night factories in
China and Asia. We see this happening in all sorts of consumer goods from
DVD's, movies, music, tools, and electronic goods to yes even airbrushes. They
take all sorts of brand name products and copy them selling them either under a
house brand name or no label, brand at all. These products might look like a
sweet deal but seldom are, they are made of inferior materials using poor
manufacturing practices, paying their workers next to nothing and come with no
warranty or real support. *Finding replace parts for what is referred to as
knock off airbrushes (and yes you will need them) is almost impossible and tech
help should you need it is non existent.
Avoid buying airbrushes where
replacement parts are only available thru the one retailer selling that
airbrush. Should that retailer disappear you'll be stuck with an airbrush you
can't find replacement parts for, it happens all too often. If the model
airbrush you are considering buying is not widely available thru a wide array
of retailers you could very well be headed for trouble getting parts and tech
support down the road.
Retailers selling these knock off airbrushes may
tell you their parts fit a name brand airbrush or that name brand airbrush
parts will fit their knock off airbrushes. Seldom is this a reality, thread
patterns are different in nozzles, the quality of materials used to make
airbrush parts are different from knock off airbrushes to brand name
airbrushes. Airbrushes are a tool after all you can go to the flea market and
buy a cheap wrench or you can go to Sears (Craftsman) or Snap On and buy a
quality tool. And so it goes with airbrushes what looks like a sweet deal on a
knock off airbrush in the end might not be so sweet.
Airbrushes are
finely engineered tools each part is manufactured, machined to work with each
other in a precise manner. To really appreciate the capabilities of a airbrush
stick with parts made by the manufacture of that airbrush.
As an
artist, hobbyists, craft person the protection of intellectual property should
be very important to you we all need to be aware of. Not supporting those
companies that owe their success to stealing the ideas (intellectual property)
of others is one way to help put a stop to it. Do not reward or validate these
companies by doing business with them.
Below are some pictures of
brand name airbrushes and pictures of other airbrushes you will find for sale
on web sites retailing airbrush supplies and in On Line auctions. Look at the
brand name airbrushes and than the other airbrushes I will leave it to you to
draw your own conclusions.

On this page I just showed you a few (very few)
examples of what's available out there. Which airbrush you buy is totally up to
you; this was meant to help you become an educated and informed consumer. No
matter which airbrush you purchase I hope you enjoy using it and remember "it's
just paint, relax and have fun". |
