Airbrushing A Jean Vest
By Carol Wright
I would like to thank Carol for allowing me to put this on
this web site . Carol entered the vest in our Airbrush Magazine art contest and
wrote this step by step as an after thought at my request. As she did not have
pictures of the process I posted it here for everyone to read instead of
putting it in the magazine. But watch for other step by step article's done by
Carl coming soon to the magazine . As you will see she is a very talented
artist. THANK YOU CAROL and again Tony's Airbrush club on Yahoo.
Any artist who would like to add article's to this site or
our Airbrush Magazine www.airbrushartistmagazine.com
is more than welcome to do so. Just e-mail me I would be happy to add your
article and I'm sure the many people who visit this site would be grateful
also.
Thanks

I had started this vest way back in June, just before I
opened my tattoo shop and since that time had not had the time to continue
working on it. I laid down the rough shadow lines in black. nothing too heavy
just to give me a rough idea on how I wanted the tiger to look like. Then up
until last week it sat in my studio untouched airbrush guns locked in their
holders, paint waiting to be mixed and sprayed. Compressor standing guard. So
on one of my quick runs into my studio I stopped and looked at the jean vest
sitting on the cardboard t-shirt board poised on my easel, and thought...I have
to finish that tiger. So I took the day off of work from the tattoo shop and
decided to finish it up....
I first re evaluated whether the black had to be redone ,
and decided I would only touch up the necessary areas after the other colors
were layered on . Starting with a Medium toned Orange , spraying the areas with
that color , I then added a few drops of black and burnt sienna to the orange
to give the darker orange areas that at night shadow look . from there I
remixed a lighter toned orange with a bit of butter cream colored acrylic to
accent the highlighted orange or raised areas of the tiger . Now I wanted to
use as much of the jean to show thru the white as I could and just high light
the intense areas only with a greyish white .
Roughly spraying the areas , not really being careful with
the greyish white as I will be carefully highlighting with a bright white in
the areas that only make the closest areas stand out . The nose was done with a
muddied pink also same concept ... medium tone then dark shadow then highlight
closest areas . The eyes where sprayed quickly with the same concept...a golden
yellow .Then darker golden yellow toned with a few drops of black ... then the
lighter golden yellow for lighted areas....then the white flash dot of light in
the eyes were put in as I was putting the whiskers and the whitest white areas
on the tigers face ......Voila shes finished....
I had a rubber stamp made with my name on it (did that in my
photoshop 6 program on this puter) took it to a rubber stamp company and they
made that up in 2 days....I brush on my white acrylic paint onto my stamp and
then stamp my name on the jacket . So that I get a quick clean , clear , and
same signature on all my pieces of work that I do . ( looks more professional )
. After I let the Paint dry for about one hour . I used my old and trusted
passche H to spray the Liquitex flexible surface cover clear coat over the
entire tigers face . Then put it in my drier at the hottest setting for one
hour....now you can wash the hell outta that vest , drag it down the street ,
throw up on it or whatever damage short of permanent paint over the top of it
... and it will look wonderful as the first day it was painted . The airbrushes
I used was first my Iwata -b to lay down the black shaded areas and the orange.
Then I used my Vega 2000 to tighten the black lines and get the white high
lights and all other small thin lined areas and last but not least my old ( 25
year old ) passche H , my work horse and trusted get me thru any type of paint
airbrush...for the sealing and protection on the vest . The PSI was between 5
and 20 depending on thickness of paint .... thats it .. thats all ... cant wait
to do the next .... oh and next time I'll take a step by step photo process to
show you how I did it . Oh yes and the paint I used was Createx with createx
bond all and catalysts mixed with all the colors of createx paint and also not
to forget ... the liquitex medium extenders to thin out and make the paint flow
easily thru the tip of your airbrushes . Even though Createx paint is wonderful
for fabric and is durable you don't want to take the chance that a hot wash
accident wont kill your masterpiece ... so always overdo and be safe .... when
putting extenders , catalyse and bond all into your paint . I always do and
have found that the final result lasts forever . Remember to dispose of any
paint that you have mixed with bond all and catalyse after you use it , unless
you plan on using it right away .... well thats it ... I' ve yapped enough ....
hope this helped ... take care and thanks again .... Carol Wright
